Surgeon’s Hands has 2 osteotomes: a 1mm and a 2mm. The 1mm osteotome is extremely sharp, and its primary purpose is to pierce the hard bone of the cortical plate, including the crestal cortical bone of an edentulous site or the cribriform plate of a re-direct in an immediate extraction socket.

The 2mm osteotome is less sharp and is is used to widen the initial opening created by the 1mm osteotome. The 2mm osteotome can be used as a bone manipulation instrument to feel for structures in the cancellous bone during the extension of the osteotomy.

In the process of implant placement, the 1mm osteotome is used first to pierce the cortical plate.** An endo stop is used to determine the soft tissue thickness, and the stop can be adjusted to the desired initial length. Next, the osteotome is used to pierce the crestal cortical bone to the surgeon’s desired length. Thereafter, the 2mm osteotome is used to widen the initial crestal opening to accommodate the next step in the process: the Bone Scalpel.

**NOTE: If the surgeon is unable to pierce the plate with the osteotome, he or she can use the Driver with a pilot drill, which can pierce a dense cortical plate much more easily.
